Rescues 2015
St Davids Tamar class lifeboat “Norah Wortley” arrived at
station on 15th April 2013 to be kept afloat on a mooring
at St Justinians until her new boathouse was built. The
Tyne class ALB “Garside” was retained to cover
whenever the Tamar had to be removed from her mooring
in bad weather, etc.

31st October 2015 – ALB
At 11.38am the Tamar lifeboat proceeded to Porthclais to
search the area following reports of an upturned kayak. The
kayak was located and a search for the occupant started.
The search was ended when the coastguard discovered that
the kayak had been washed off of the beach at Little Haven
during gale force winds. St Davids and Broad Haven
coastguards also searched. Lifeboat returned to station at
12.55pm.
17th October 2015 – ALB
Tamar ALB proceeded at 9.20am to the 7.5m fishing vessel
“Danny Boy II”, with 2 people on board south of Skomer
Island. The vessel, which had steering problems, was
escorted into Milford Haven. Lifeboat returned to station at
11.35am.
4th October 2015 – ALB and ILB
Tamar ALB and ILB tasked at 11.17am by coastguards to
Porthgain where several members of the public had reported
someone shouting for help from the base of the cliff. After a
short search it was discovered that a seal pup was the source
of the ‘shouting’ and the lifeboats returned to station at
12.34pm.
8th September 2015 – Both Boats
Tamar ALB and ILB proceeded at 4pm to 999 calls for a
swimmer being carried away by the tide from Traethllyfn
beach near Abereiddi. On arrival on scene it was discovered
that the woman had managed to get ashore by herself further
along the coast. All units released and lifeboats returned to
station at 5.08pm.
1st September 2015 – Both Boats
At about 9pm the Tamar ALB and ILB requested to launch to
locate an overdue inflatable in the Ramsey Sound area. As
the crew were mustering the vessel was sighted paddling
ashore at St Justinians having suffered engine failure.
Lifeboats stood down.
26th August 2015 – Both Boats
At 1.08pm the Tamar ALB was called to Solva where an 11
year old boy had sustained a back injury on an inaccessible
beach. On arrival the Y-boat was deployed and 3 crew went
ashore. Paramedics were transferred from Solva harbour and
the boy airlifted by helicopter to an ambulance waiting at the
cliff top. The lifeboats returned to station at 2.48pm.
26th August 2015 – ILB
At 12.49pm the ILB was launched to a swimmer reported in
difficulties at Whitesands. After a thorough search nothing
was found and it was believed that the swimmer had
managed to reach shore unaided. The ILB was then tasked
to another incident.
25th August 2015 – ALB
At 4.30pm the Tamar ALB proceeded to Abercastle where a
kayak was reported to be in difficulties. The two occupants
were brought aboard the lifeboat and returned to shore along
with their equipment. The lifeboat returned to station at
6.22pm.
25th August 2015 – ALB
Whilst on exercise at 2.27pm the Tyne ALB was diverted to a
5m RIB with engine failure to the east of Solva. The 3
occupants had swam ashore and climbed up the cliffs and the
lifeboat recovered the vessel and took it to Solva harbour. It
returned to it’s exercise at 3.00pm.
24th August 2015 – ALB
Tamar ALB launched at 3.50pm to a 19 year old male who
had been injured whilst tombstoning near Porthclais. On
arrival the Y-boat was deployed and 4 crew members went
ashore to give first aid. The man, who had dislocated both
shoulders, was airlifted to hospital. The lifeboat returned to
station at 5.53pm.
15th August 2015 – Both Boats
ILB and Tamar ALB launched at 12.15pm to an abseiler who
had fallen 15m down the cliff near the entrance to Porthclais.
First aid was administered and the man landed in Porthclais
to a waiting ambulance. Returned to station at 1.20pm.
14th August 2015 – ILB
ILB crew paged at 12.08pm to 2 kayakers reported at Caerfai
being blown offshore. As the crew assembled the
coastguards received further information indicating the
kayakers were making for the shore and the ILB was stood-
down. False alarm.
12th August 2015 – ILB
At about 1.55pm, whilst the ILB was proceeding to the
previous incident, the coastguards took a report of another
kayaker in difficulties at Whitesands. Initially the Tamar ALB
was requested but as the ILB was released from the previous
false alarm they responded to the incident. On arrival the
reported kayak was almost ashore so they escorted it to the
beach. Returned to station at about 2.30pm.
12th August 2015 – ILB
At 1.45pm the ILB launched to a kayaker reported in
difficulties at Caerfai. On arrival they found that the reported
vessel was actually a small fishing dinghy and the occupants
did not require any assistance. False alarm.
5th August 2015 – Both Boats
Tyne ALB and ILB launched at 3.40pm to assist Police and
Coastguards to search for a distressed woman missing from a
local campsite. The ILB crew located the woman about 1½
miles south of the station and 3 crew members went ashore to
assist her. The RAF Chivenor rescue helicopter airlifted the
woman to the clifftop and she was taken by ambulance to
hospital. Rehoused at 5.15pm.
2nd August 2015 – ILB
Whilst recovering onto the slipway following the previous
incident the ILB was tasked to an inflatable kayak being blown
away near Abereiddi. The ILB arrived on scene to find that
the occupant had managed to get ashore further up the coast.
Returned to station at 3.30pm.
2nd August 2015 – ILB
ILB launched at 2.00pm to assist kayakers reported in
difficulty near St Davids Head. On arrival they found that 2
people had landed on Porthmelgan beach whilst a second
kayaker towed their vessel back to Whitesands. ILB stood by
until he reached the beach then returned to station at 2.20pm.
1st August 2015 – Medivac
Around 4.30pm members of the lifeboat crew at the station
assisted St Davids coastguards with first aid treatment for a
25 year old kayaker with a suspected broken ankle after
falling on the steps at St Justinians. The woman was airlifted
to hospital in Haverfordwest.
28th July 2015 – ALB
Tyne ALB launched at 2.30pm to reports of another kayaker in
difficulties at Abereiddi. Whilst heading to the scene the
lifeboat was turned back as the kayaker had reached the
shore unaided. Returned to station at 3.04pm.
28th July 2015 – ALB
Tamar ALB proceeded at 1:05pm to a report of a kayaker
overdue to the north of Abereiddi. A search of the area was
carried out by the lifeboat and coastguards until the missing
person was located on the cliff path having managed to get
ashore by himself. Returned to station at 2.30pm.
22nd July 2015 – ALB
At 12:43pm the Tamar ALB proceeded to Caerfai where a
kayaker had been reported in difficulties. On arrival it was
found that a passing boat had assisted the man back into his
kayak so the lifeboat escorted him back to the harbour at
Porthclais. Returned to station at 1.40pm.
21st July 2015 – ALB
At 4.29pm the Tamar ALB proceeded to Newgale to assist 5
people reported in the water. Little Haven ILB, RNLI
Lifeguards and an RAF rescue helicopter were also tasked.
All persons were brought ashore by the lifeguards and the
ALB returned to station at 5.40pm.
8th July 2015 – Both Boats
At 6:58pm, whilst on exercise, the Tamar ALB and ILB were
tasked to 2 people in trouble in the water at Newgale. Little
Haven ILB was also tasked. The 2 people had made it
ashore but crew members from both stations went ashore to
provide first aid until the arrival of an ambulance. Returned to
station at 8.20pm.
19th June 2015 – Both Boats
Tamar ALB and ILB proceeded at 12.38pm to a coasteerer
with an injured back in the water near Porthclais. The woman
was in severe pain and had to be floated into a stretcher by 4
crew members who entered the water to assist her. She was
given pain relief and first aid aboard the lifeboat until an RAF
rescue helicopter winched down their paramedic to provide
further treatment. After about 45 minutes the woman was
winched into the helicopter and flown to hospital at Cardiff.
The lifeboats returned to station at 2.37pm.
17th June 2015 – ALB
Tamar ALB proceeded at 4.04pm to a coasteerer with an in
injured leg near Porthclais. The man was given first aid
treatment for a dislocated knee and dislocated ankle before
being evacuated from the rocks to an ambulance waiting at
Porthclais. Lifeboat back at station at 5.25pm.
25th May 2015 – ILB
ILB launched at 7.30pm for a kayaker reported in difficulties
near Abereiddi. The ILB and St Davids coastguards could
find no sign of the kayaker when they arrived at the scene. A
search was commenced until it was discovered that the
kayaker had reached the shore unaided. The ILB returned to
station at 8.25pm.
25th May 2015 – ILB
ILB launched at 11.33am to 2 kayakers in the water at
Caerfai. On arrival the lifeboat found that the 2 people had
been picked up by another vessel. So the ILB transferred the
2 people and their kayaks onto the beach. ILB returned to
station at 12.16pm.
14th May 2015 – ALB
At 1.00pm the Tamar ALB proceeded to the assistance of a
10m fishing vessel with 2 people on board which had
complete power failure just south of the Bitches Reef in
Ramsey Sound. The vessel was taken in tow to Solva and
the ALB returned to station at 2.30pm.
21st April 2015 – Medivac
At 3.15 pm members of the lifeboat crew assisted St Davids
coastguards and paramedics to evacuate a person taken ill at
the lifeboat station to an ambulance at the cliff top. He was
taken to hospital for tests.
21st April 2015 – Both Boats
Tamar ALB and ILB launched at 1.12am to assist a 12 metre
yacht aground and listing at the entrance to Solva harbour.
The two occupants were abandoning the vessel to take to
their dinghy. The lifeboats located the yacht and the ILB
recovered the two people from the dinghy and landed them
onto the ALB. After about 4 hours the yacht was refloated and
then taken in tow to Dale as her engine was overheating. The
ILB returned to station at 7.03am and the ALB at 10.00am.
4th April 2015 – ALB
Tamar ALB proceeded at 6.55pm to 4 people cut off by the
tide in St Brides Bay, their exact whereabouts were unknown.
The lifeboat joined Little Haven ILB, coastguards and police in
the search. Fortunately the four were quickly found by the
Little Haven ILB and taken to safety at Newgale. Returned to
station at 7.15pm.
25th March 2015 - ILB
Relief D-768 launched at 6.20pm to 4 adult males cut off by
the tide at Carreg-y-Fran. The ILB arrived on scene 10
minutes after launch and brought the people ashore at
Porthclais harbour. Back at station 7.26pm.
22/23rd March 2015 – ALB
Tamar ALB proceeded at 10.33pm on 22nd March to a yacht
which had lost power and was drifting in the Irish Sea. ALB
was joined by Angle ALB to search an area 22 miles offshore.
An EPIRB distress signal was later received by the Irish
coastguards and the yacht was located and towed to safety
by the Rosslare Harbour ALB. St Davids ALB back at station
at 2.00am on 23rd March.
